Les Misrables

Every so often the curtain rises on a theatrical masterpiece. In 1980, Les Misrables opened in Paris. Since then the musical has become one of the most well known and much loved musicals of it's time, along side those of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals - especially The Phantom of the Opera.

What sets Les Misrables apart from the rest or the "West End Musicals" may well be the story itself. The writer Victor Hugo paints a harsh picture of 19th century Paris of such unimaginable suffering, that was much worse than Britain at that time. This certainly come through in the songs in the musical so much but doesn't trivialise the plight of the French people at that time. It must be a difficult task to write a story that is able to tell such a moving story that has such a strong political message and include a love story too, but write a musical and keep the serious message can be quite a task.

I have been to see the musical twice and I think it's the best piece theatre I have ever seen. I would seriously recommend you to go to see this musical, if you haven't done so already.
